Podcast: "I feel bad for the picture-perfect girl"
Issue #104: Womaning with a physical challenge
Hello ji,
This week, I released the first video episode of the Womaning podcast - check it out:
My guest for this episode is Madhuvanthi Sundararajan. Madhu is one of the funniest, goofiest, most insightful people I have had the pleasure of meeting. She is a branding and marketing pro with an MBA from IIM Bangalore. Madhu has a rare form of muscular dystrophy that limits her mobility and our conversation is mostly about what it is like to be a woman living with a physical challenge in India.
This conversation was an education for me. In fact, re-listening to the episode during editing made me feel lucky to have this platform because I don't think I would have had the privilege of this conversation without the agenda of the podcast.
In the episode, we talk about the portrayal of people living with physical challenges in the media, the poor accessibility of our public spaces, and what that means for the representation of people living with mobility challenges.
My favourite part of the podcast is where Madhu speaks with amazing clarity and humour about going through dating and marriage as a woman who has a physical challenge. After all the warnings from everyone about finding love as a physically challenged woman, Madhu says she found reality to be quite different.
"I actually feel very bad for the picture-perfect girl", she says at one point.
When you hear the full episode, you will understand why she says it and how much she means it.
If you prefer listening to the audio version, you can find it on all the podcasting platforms, including Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Castbox, Pocket Casts, Castro, and Podcast Addict.
This episode is pure gold, and a must-listen whoever you are (if I may say so myself).
Happy listening!
Mahima
